While primarily known for its pottery, the area and its surroundings are also home to several glass-blowing studios, making it a hub for traditional Okinawan crafts.
The village is characterized by workshops with traditional red-tiled roofs, nestled in a quiet, lush green environment. At each workshop, you can admire plates, bowls, and vases meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans, and even purchase your favorite pieces. Their rustic yet powerful designs and vibrant Okinawan colors are perfect for both daily use and souvenirs. It is a place where you can truly feel the warmth of handmade craftsmanship.

After purchasing your Yachimun bowls or Ryukyu glass treasures, displaying them in a beautiful “Kumiko” latticework shelf like this will keep your travel memories alive in style.

Okinawa’s local cuisine
Sata Andagi (Okinawan Doughnuts)
Sata Andagi are traditional Okinawan deep-fried sweets, similar to doughnuts. While they can now be found throughout Japan, experiencing them freshly made—with a crispy outside and fluffy inside—is a treat unique to Okinawa.
The name comes from the Okinawan words for sugar (sata), oil (anda), and fried (agi). You can even find many specialty shops dedicated to these local favorites.

Okinawa Soba
Unlike traditional Japanese soba, Okinawa Soba is made from 100% wheat flour rather than buckwheat, resulting in thick and chewy noodles. The soup is crafted from a rich, savory broth made with pork bones and dried bonito flakes, offering a deep yet clean flavor.
The classic bowl is topped with simmered pork belly (Sanmainiku), fish cakes, green onions, and pickled red ginger. In recent years, variations such as “Soki Soba” (with tender pork spare ribs) and “Vegetable Soba” have also become highly popular.
Exploring Okinawa Soba Across the Island
Okinawa Soba is a soul food you’ll encounter in every region as you travel across the island. While exploring the Central area, it’s a great idea to venture out to famous shops in the North and South to experience the diverse local flavors and unique atmospheres.

The texture of the noodles and the depth of the broth vary greatly from shop to shop. Comparing different bowls as you drive across Okinawa is one of the best ways to find your personal favorite!
